According to religious texts Markandeya Rishi is immortal. The name of Rishi Markandeya also appears among the eight immortal people. His father was Markandu Rishi. When Markandu Rishi did not have any children, he worshiped Lord Shiva along with his wife. Lord Shiva, who appeared from his penance, asked him whether he wanted a good long life son or a virtuous 16 year old son. Then the Markandu sage said that he wanted a short but virtuous son. Lord Shiva granted this boon to him.
When Markandeya Rishi was about to turn 16, he came to know about this through his mother. Knowing about his death, he did not get disturbed and got absorbed in Shiva bhakti. During this, with the help of the Saptarishis, he received the initiation of Mahamrityunjaya Mantra from Brahmadev. The effect of this mantra was that when Yamraj came to kill his life at the appointed time, Lord Shiva himself appeared to save the sage Markandeya absorbed in Shiva devotion and he neutralized the attack of Yamraj. Seeing the devotion of the child Markandeya, Lord Shiva gave him the boon of being immortal.
