Vastu is an ancient method of building construction and arranging interior items. By arranging things means the interior decoration of the house. Vastu means "object" whereas Shastra refers to the discipline or text. The meaning of "Vastu Shastra" is "the text of the object" i.e. the discipline related to the object.
Vastu Shastra means the rules used in building construction. From these rules it is ascertained that where and in which direction it is auspicious to keep things in the house. Special care is taken in Vastu that the direction is right for the object. In another way, there is correct knowledge of directions in Vastu Shastra.

Eight directions are important in Vastu Shastra. The names and importance of these eight directions are given further in this article. Although basically there are only four directions, but 4 angles are also formed from these four directions which are called Vidisha. In this way the total number of directions is 8. Akash and Hades are also two other directions, but we will not talk about them here.
