51 Shaktipeeth Mythology and Description

Although 108 shaktipeeths are mentioned in Devi Bhagwat and 72 shaktipeeths are mentioned in Devi Gita, 52 shaktipeeths are mentioned in Tantrachudamani. Of course only 51 Shaktipeeths have been discussed in Devi Purana. Some of these 51 Shaktipeeths are also abroad and are revered by worship.

It is to be known that out of these 51 Shaktipeeths, after the partition of India, 5 became even less and 42 Shakti Peeths are left in today's India. 1 Shaktipeeth went to Pakistan and 4 to Bangladesh. Of the remaining 4 Peethas, 1 is in Sri Lanka, 1 is in Tibet and 2 is in Nepal.

The story in the context of these 51 Shaktipeeths located in the country and abroad is that as the daughter of King Prajapati Daksha, Mata Jagadambika was born as Sati and married Lord Shiva. Once a group of sages were performing a yajna. All the deities were invited to the Yagya. When King Daksha came, everyone stood up but Lord Shiva did not stand up. Lord Shiva was the son-in-law of Daksha. Seeing this, King Daksha became very angry. Daksha always looked at his son-in-law Shiva with contempt. King Prajapati Daksha, the father of Sati, organized a yagya named 'Brihaspati Sarva / Brihasani' at Kankhal (Haridwar). Brahma, Vishnu, Indra and other gods and goddesses were invited to that yagya, but deliberately did not invite Lord Shiva, the husband of Sati, to attend this yagya. Due to which Lord Shiva did not participate in this Yagya. Sati came to know from Narada that a yagya is being held at her father's place but she has not been invited. Knowing this, she got angry. Narada advised them that there was no need to invite the father to go to his place. When Sati started going to her father's house, Lord Shiva refused. But Sati insisted on not being called by her father and stopped by Shankarji and went to attend the yagya. At the sacrificial site, Sati asked her father Daksha the reason for not inviting Shankar and expressed fierce opposition to the father. On this Daksha started talking derogatory about Lord Shankar in front of Sati. Sati, who was suffering from this humiliation, could not bear all this and sacrificed her life by jumping into the yagya-fire pit. When Lord Shankar came to know about this accident, his third eye opened in anger. There was a catastrophe-like outcry everywhere. On the orders of Lord Shankar, Veerabhadra beheaded Daksha and punished the other gods for listening to Shiva's condemnation and all the gods and sages fled from the place of sacrifice, frightened by the furious wrath of his ganas. Then Lord Shiva took out the body of Sati from the Yagyakund in the separation of Sati and lifted the body of Sati on the shoulder and started traveling on the whole earth in grief. Bhagwati Sati appeared to Shiva in space and told him that wherever the fragments of his body would fall apart, there would be the rise of the Mahashaktipeeth. Taking the dead body of Sati, Shiva while roaming on the earth also started performing the Tandava dance, due to which the situation of catastrophe started arising on the earth. Seeing the three worlds including the earth distraught and on the persuasion of the gods, Lord Vishnu broke the body of Sati into pieces with the Sudarshan Chakra and dropped it on the earth. Whenever Shiva slammed his feet in a dance posture, Vishnu would cut off any part of the body with his chakra and drop its pieces on the earth. According to 'Tantra-Chudamani', in this way, wherever the pieces of Sati's body, the clothes or ornaments worn by it fell, there-there Shaktipeeth came into existence. In this way, the Shaktipeeths of the mother were built in a total of 51 places. In the next life, Sati took birth as Parvati in the house of the Himavan king and received Karshiva as her husband again with severe penance.
